Q: Will anyone in the world be able to join our list if we put it on the Community Network?
A: Only members can participate in the Community Network. It is an "Intranet," which means it is an Internet/Web entity that is not available to the general public. (See Intranet.)
Within the Intranet, you can select who joins your Affinity Group by making it closed. When you configure your affinity group or edit it using the Edit Basic Information link in the left column of any affinity group page, you will see a section saying this:
Is this affinity group open or closed? An open affinity group can be joined by anyone in the community. A closed discussion can be joined by invitation only.
If you click the option that says Open Affinity Group, then any Community Network member can join. If you choose Closed Affinity Group (members only) then only invited members will be able to join. group members may request to join a affinity group, but moderators are not obligated to add anyone to a closed list. See How do we make our Affinity Group private?
We encourage Moderators to keep affinity groups open, or to have clearly spelled out criteria for inclusion on closed lists, so that members who would benefit will have access to pertinent information.
