| Looking for assistance in tight budget times. The Multnomah county health department is looking for good ideas on how to better present our health of the county data and other epidemiological work. Our initial requirement is a simple and graphically intuitive/comparitive way of presenting these county level statistics. if successful we would like to also pursue map/interactive map based presentation of disaggregated health data and health equity information. I have a tight window to pull together ideas and would appreciate any and all feed back form idea people to those available to carry out the work. we also would like to draw on portland based persons who can bring local insight. That being said our website is undergoing transformation. the current site http://mchealth.org/ will transition to a new model that looks and behaves like this http://www.multco.us/chair . As usual we are delayed in getting any technical details yet. I appreciate your helpShawn Messick, Informatics manager, MCHD

SEPTEMBER 4
Maps 2.0, Google Earth, and GPS: What's New, What Works
HumaniNet
will present a status report on their Maps 2.0 initiative, which is
exploring ready-to-use Web-based mapping tools for humanitarian and
nonprofit organizations.
Dylan Myers, a digital mapping
specialist at Google Maps, will also be there to answer your questions
on the ever-expanding toolkit of Google Maps and Google Earth. Dylan
was a key member of a Mercy Corps team that conducted a GIS (geospatial
information systems) project in Indonesia following the 2004 tsunami.
Justin
Perkins, an online marketing expert and Care2's Nonprofit Services
Director, will also be present and was an advisor to the Maps 2.0
project at NetSquared.
SCHEDULE:
* 5 PM - Conversation and Networking
* 6 PM - Presentation/Q&A by Gregg Swanson and Matt Blair of HumaniNet
* 6:30 PM - More networking and Q/A with Dylan Meyers, Google Maps
PLACE: Lucky Lab Beer Hall - 1945 NW Quimby
RSVP: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1022977
Humaninet
will briefly discuss the initial findings of the research, which is
based on interviews with aid and relief managers in Afghanistan, Sudan,
Singapore, London, and – not least - Portland. Matt will share some
notes on emerging Web 2.0 social mapping services, including the
promise and pitfalls of 'crowd-sourced' geospatial data.
Following
Q&A, you can meet Dylan, see demos, exchange ideas, practice your
"geo-geek speak," and learn more about what online maps can do for your
project or organization.
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Interested in more Maps 2.0?
Join
Humaninet for an in-depth workshop, Maps 2.0, Google Earth, and GPS:
What's new, What works, during the afternoon of September 4.
Attendees will:
* Hear a full presentation on the findings and analysis of Maps 2.0, with discussion following.
* Discuss trends with Dylan Myers of Google Maps, who will be available to answer questions.
* Get a better understanding of Google tools and the Google Outreach program.
* Get a hands-on demo of GPS, to include posting the locations on Google Earth.
* Learn different ways that Google tools can be used for nonprofit and humanitarian benefit.
* Network with other nonprofit managers and GIS practitioners.
The
workshop will be held at Mercy Corps, from 2:00 – 4:00. As space is
limited to maintain a small-group format, a $35 registration will be
charged in advance. Those interested should contact HumaniNet at info@humaninet.org .
